Money means different things to different people; a means to enjoy life, a scant resource necessary to keep a roof over their heads, a way to measure a life well lived, or the root of society’s problems. Whatever money means to you, however, the likelihood is that you live in a society that is organised around the production, accumulation and spending of money.
But disruption looms as technology advances.
As money is increasingly digitalised – from coins and notes linked to gold to credit cards and now to digital currencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum – it is increasingly dematerialised and decentralised, destabilising governmental control over currency in unprecedented ways.
Further, wage labour is a key characteristic of capitalist society, and yet as automation progresses – itself driven by capital accumulation and the efficiencies available through artificial intelligence and robotics – the very concept of wage labour is threatened. How will money be earned in a society less reliant on human work?
The disruptions abound: could new forms of welfare payments help rebalance government spending? Will consumers’ rejection of ‘stuff’ in favour of ‘experiences’ be reflected in the nature of the transactions? What future for cash-reliant businesses and organisations in a cashless society?
Put simply, is this the end of money as we know it.
