A new research initiative brought to you by Trajectory and Pragmatix Advisory.
The UK’s fertility rate has declined to record levels. This is reshaping the population as the number of children in society declines. Rather than engage in futile attempts to raise the fertility rate to replacement levels, the UK should start adapting to this new ‘child-less’ society.
This is the first in a four-part series authored by Trajectory and Pragmatix Advisory on the challenges of an ageing population and low fertility in the United Kingdom. The next piece will ask what the potential consequences are of a prolonged period of falling or static living standards. Many of these will have knock-on impacts on the economy, the fertility rate, or both, creating an unvirtuous cycle. The final blog will look at potential policy responses.
