The world is on the brink of transformation as robotics and artificial intelligence combine to herald a new era in work and society. One recent report by PwC suggests that more than 30% of current jobs in the labour market could be obsolete by the early 2030s.
Like many tech trends, the rise of the machines is being met with a mixture of awe and fear – we are excited by the possibilities while simultaneously terrified of their consequences. How quickly will I be obsolete? What should I get training in? When do I get my driverless car?
The breadth of the issue means there are implications for policy makers, government, business and consumers. Depending on the pace of automation and the speed of take up, we will need new definitions of work, new forms of education, and potentially even a new social contract.
Despite the challenges ahead, there are opportunities for new ways of balancing work with life, and for new efficiencies in public service delivery.
