The Future of Television

This month, as AppleTV launches, Fleabag ends, and a new series of Killing Eve gets underway (only in the US) we interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you a Trends Briefing exploring the Future of TV.

Broadcast TV is being disrupted by several forces. The rise of video on demand services and online content – sometimes watched on a TV, sometimes on another device entirely – change the way consumers view content. This has implications for scheduling, advertising, parental controls and – perhaps unique to the UK context – the licence fee.

The new players – of which Apple is the latest – are also navigating a brave new world. With millions of subscribers but less profit, on demand services like Netflix and Amazon Prime are making bold new strides into original programming, Oscar-winning film production and live sports broadcast. For consumers, the result is an ever growing list of must-have subscriptions – which might be behind the first rise in online piracy for years.

To understand what’s next for TV – and what TV even looks like in the future – we’ll examine these issues in the context of major consumer trends: The Digitalisation of Leisure, The Deregulation of Life and Polarisation. The implications go beyond TV and to digital media, strategy and all forms of leisure and consumer behaviour. Whatever industry you’re in, this is must-watch stuff.
