Privacy, Trust & Transparency:

Does Privacy Still Exist?

Thursday 24th May 2018 – 08.30-09.30

The Fable, 52 Holborn Viaduct, EC1A 2FD

This month sees the introduction of comprehensive data protection regulations across the EU that aim to grant individuals greater control over their personal information and an unprecedented ‘right to be forgotten’. But we still share data and personal information – sometimes in direct exchange for services, sometimes just so we can get to the checkout quicker – at a massive rate.

Our latest TGF data suggests that trust in certain professions and institutions – the media, business and politics – is low. This is hardly a surprise given the numerous scandals of recent years, one of the most recent being the Cambridge Analytica and Facebook revelations, which have prompted Mark Zuckerberg to welcome GDPR as a ‘positive step forward for the internet’.

Time will tell if this is genuine support or a bid to repair some of the reputational damage. Data breaches are already a frontier in ethical debates and digital security a CSR issue as much as a customer service one.

We live in an era of low trust, unprecedented transparency and instant information. We share details of our private lives with people we know, and companies we don’t, with ease. This is a fragile coalition, and one that raises the question: is privacy is still a realistic ambition in 2018 and beyond?

Get Smarter Over Breakfast

Our Trends Breakfasts have been running for five years, and each month sees a different topic discussed and debated over coffee and croissants. Taking place on a private floor of a popular city location, an array of figures from different industries hear our thoughts on the chosen topic, which often draws on latest findings from our global attitudes and values survey,Trajectory Global Foresight.
