Leisure has never been as important to consumers as it is today.

Over the past 30 years a remarkable transformation has taken place, with consumers in the UK and elsewhere starting to prioritise their free time over their jobs. This bore fruit during the last decade of economic disruption as despite financial constraints consumers dug deep to carry on – and increase – leisure spending.

But today that is under threat. Consumers are in a recessionary mood, leisure spending has stalled and households are earmarking treats and discretionary items for cutbacks in the months ahead. In the long term the foundations of our leisure time face challenges from healthier lifestyles, digitalisation and more comfortable homes.

Perhaps the death of the play society has been exaggerated. Whatever economic challenges are on the horizon, the fundamental consumer demands are the same – leisure takes priority over everything else. Health, technology, demographic change will all create new opportunities for leisure, although the activities may not resemble the play society of today.

Is this the end of the play society? Or is the game simply changing?
